On March 20th 2017, the European Commission awarded our Swedish member Malmö with the European Mobility Week Award and the conglomeration of Brussels-Capital with the 5th Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning for its urban freight policy.

Two awards, two outstanding strategies

The European Mobility Week Award was designed for local authorities to highlight what have they done best to raise awareness on sustainable mobility. The city of Malmö was honored for its promotion of active travel, as it prioritizes pedestrians and cyclists in its transport policy. The Swedish city has also created a safe and attractive city center, by e.g. introducing new pedestrian streets and a new bike-sharing system, offering 500 bicycles in 50 different stations.
Malmö was also recognized for its numerous successful partnerships with local businesses, and its pioneering engagement of citizens through strong public communication and continuous dialogue. Last year, Malmö had already been awarded for its outstanding Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning.

The Award for Sustainable Urban Mobility Planning, won in 2016 by Brussels-Capital region, rewards local authorities for their mobility plan, which takes into account the different transport needs of citizens and businesses and manages to integrate the movement of goods and services in the transport planning. Brussels-Capital region was recognized for successfully integrating its strategic plan for freight transport within the passenger mobility strategy. It was awarded for its capacity to identify transport obstacles and tackle them with new efficient solutions, such as consolidation centers.
Brussels capital-region has also pioneered in supporting private sector initiatives, which have resulted in improved urban logistics (e.g. more efficient freight transport, reduction of number of the number of freight kilometers in the city).
