Rotterdam, the Netherlands

Rotterdam is a young, attractive and dynamic global city, continuously renewing itself at a rapid rate. Sparkling skyscrapers, an impressive port, trendy restaurants and food markets, renowned museums and awesome festivals are the direct result of the can-do mentality of the Rotterdammers. Rotterdam has its share of surprising neighbourhoods and districts, each with its own distinct, strong identity. It is a city with such a variety of living environments that, regardless of lifestyle, age or cultural background, everyone can find a home there.

Living Streets in Rotterdam

Living Streets are called Dream Streets in Rotterdam. It is all about making visible what the possibilities are for making better use of the public outdoor space for playing and meeting your neighboors. This is especially the case in the densely populated areas where there is little private outdoor space available.
Living Street residents develop their own plan for measures to temporarily use their street as a “living room”. Measures that are implemented include removing cars, adding more green and organising social activities for the neighboorhoud.
The city government funds and facilitates when needed.

In 2015 and 2016, 9 living streets have been implemented. The deadline for submitting Dream Street projects for subsidy to the municipality is June 1, 2017. Approximately 5 more Dream Streets are expected.
