Energy security and cost-efficient heat supply

The heat supply in Brasov has gone through severe changes during the last decades. Its initial purpose and technical solution were to supply the industry with steam and secondary hot water for the population. In the 1990’s until the beginning of the 2000’s a big number of households where connected to the district heating system supplied by a coal fired cogeneration power plant. As the industry to which the steam was supplied was completely shut down in 1990, the system became ineffective and started to face huge infrastructure problems. Due to this unsecure and interrupted supply many consumers disconnected from the system changing to individual natural gas boilers.

During the years 2010 to 2012 the old coal fired plant was replaced by modern CHP gas engines, but the network remains over-dimensioned and big energy losses are still a severe problem.

The ProgressHeat H2020 project explores scenarios for the revitalisation of district heating and cooling systems in Brasov, including more renewables and innovative local incentive policies.
