Will the Energy Efficiency Plan give birth to an ambitious Energy Savings Directive?

by Floriane Bernardot on 6 June 2011 / 188 visites

The European Commission is to propose a new Directive on energy efficiency, amending and repealing the Energy Services Directive and the Combined Heat&Power -CHP- Directive.

Deriving from the Energy Efficiency Plan 2011 (EEP) adopted in March 2011, this piece of legislation the European Commission should adopt at the end of June 2011 is supposed to help the European Union reach its 20% primary energy saving objective by 2020.

Energy Cities will closely follow this legislative work to ensure the new directive provides substantial support to local authorities that have voluntarily committed to the Energy and Climate objectives of the EU through the Covenant of Mayors.

Since the new Directive will not impose any binding targets on Energy Efficiency for Member States, it is crucial that local authorities’ potential in terms of energy savings be tapped, as Energy Cities already suggested it in its position about the Energy Efficiency Plan.
