Who said climate action wasn’t fun?!

Mid-term party of the project “200 families acting for climate” in Freiburg (DE).

Saturday, February 11th 2012, in the afternoon.
About 200 families and friends gathered in Freiburg, at Historisches Kaufhaus, a prestigious building raised in the Cathedral Square. What is it that we celebrate with such fanfare? The mid-term of the project “200 families acting for climate”!

This project, initiated and implemented by the city of Freiburg, in close cooperation with its twinned town Besançon (FR), is aimed at rethinking the lifestyle in urban areas through four action fields:

  • Energy – saving electricity within the households;
  • Food – learning to better choose your food;
  • Consumption – taking care of environmental aspects and avoiding over-consumption;
  • Mobility – travelling in a more aware and eco-friendly way.

This festive afternoon was also attended by famous German actor Andreas Hoppe, and actress and writer Isabelle Roussety. The two guests presented with a great sense of humour their book entitled „Allein unter Gurken - Mein abenteuerlicher Versuch, mich regional zu ernähren“ (Alone amongst cucumbers – my adventurous try to feed myself with local products only). Then the authors of the book and the families who made the same efforts enthusiastically reported their experiences.

However this meeting wasn’t only aimed at looking at the past actions, but also at the future ones. Once again the families showed much enthusiasm, willingness and creativity, making proposals to organise “living with no meat” weeks, “gardening on your balcony“ days, and a bicycle ride in 4 steps to Besançon.
There was plenty of activities for youngsters to enjoy as well. They seized this opportunity to organise a “fashion show”, with clothes they made by themselves from used items and textile.

To close the afternoon, Deputy Mayor for Environment Gerda Stuchlik cordially invited the families to a cocktail offered by the City of Freiburg.

200 families are “acting for climate” today in Besançon and Freiburg, soon reaching 200 cities across Europe?
