Many European cities are committed
to reach the EU 2020 objective to reduce CO2 emissions by 20%, to increase energy efficiency by 20%, and to increase the proportion of renewable energy sources in the total energy mix to 20%.
Vaxjo, Delft and Grenoble signed the Covenant of Mayors, in which they are committed to take further reaching measures.
As a result of the economic crisis, investment budgets to achieve these objectives are seriously under pressure.
It is necessary for all measures taken by Governments on the short term to combat the recession, contribute to the long term perspective of a sustainable, climate proof, and international competitive economy.
In particular authorities and Governments must restore lack of confidence of private parties, so that they are not hampered in making investments that support climate policy.

The Mayors of Vaxjo, Delft and Grenoble call to the European Commission to formulate a New Green Deal, in which the credit crisis and the climate crisis are considered in their cohesion, future - proof package of measures are taken, local authorities are enabled to use financial schemes, and barriers removed. Vaxjo, Delft and Grenoble are "walking the talk" together by taking concrete actions and mutually exchanging know-how within the SESAC project.
The Sustainable Energy Systems in Advanced Cities (SESAC) project aims at showing how the local economy is able to thrive while less CO2 is emitted. This is translated into innovative energy measures in both new building developments and renovation of existing buildings. Measures focus on rational use of energy and use of renewable energy for electricity, heating and cooling. An important part of the project is tackling training programmes for builders, awareness raising of citizens, building users, protection of the vulnerable persons when confronted with raising energy prices (social housing and fuel poverty), communication and exchange of experience.
SESAC is part of the CONCERTO initiative of the European Commission.
