EU leaders reach deal on 3x20 targets

by Miriam Eisermann on 12 December 2008 / 442 visites

European Union leaders have reached a deal on its impatiently awaited energy and climate package. The plan, agreed at a Brussels summit, sets out how 27 member-countries will cut carbon emissions by 20% by 2020.

The 3x20% are supposed to become law in the European Union early next year. Critics pointed to concessions made to some nations, saying they would lessen the long-term impact of the package.

While a consensus was hard to reach amongst the Heads of Government, the local level is set to lead the EU towards the EU targets. It is most notably the Covenant of Mayors initiative which builds a bridge for local authorities to go beyond these 3x20%. Energie-Cités’ 13th Annual Rendezvous next April will be focused on how committed mayors and their citizens can focus their strategies on ambitious emissions cuts, renewables and energy efficiency.
