For all Covenant of Mayors signatories, the 29th of November should already be marked in your agenda ! That is when the Covenant of Mayors Ceremony will take place in the premises of the European Parliament, Brussels. The timing of the event is strategic, as it will coincide with the international negotiations on climate change - to be held in Durban (South Africa) from 28 November onwards - and will take place in the margins of the on-going debate on the EU Multi Annual Financial Framework, which is yet to determine the role of energy sustainability. Three good reasons to be participate :
- with your presence you demonstrate that you take your commitment seriously
- 1000 Mayors gathering in Brussels can set a positive signal in the present context of budget cuts, social protest, financial instability and energy constraints
- Mobilised signatories can keep the EU grounded during the COP17 climate summit negotiations in Durban (starting on the 28th Nov) - there is no better way to prove that Europe tackling climate and energy questions !
The official ceremony programme
Covenant signatories discussing financing at the Open Days
Beginning of this week, 100 Covenant signatories participated in a very successful thematic workshop on financing (followed by a webinar and a live helpdesk) held in the framework of the very dense Open Days week. The workshop was highly appreciated by participants. It has also been a great opportunity to show the power of the Covenant as a real PLATFORM embracing other initiatives linked to it, such as Smart Cities and establishing strategic alliances for the future.
The Covenant of Mayors stretching out to Eastern countries
From now on, Eastern European, Caucasian and Central Asian neighbouring countries will also be able to benefit from the Covenant of Mayors activities. Energy Cities welcomes the Commission’s decision (DG AIDCO) to set up a Covenant of Mayors’ Office in this region as well as the opening up of calls for projects (April 2011) to cities in these countries to help them prepare and implement their own Action Plans.
