Tampere cuts energy costs in buildings by 50%

By Floriane Cappelletti on 5 October 2018

After the TARMO+ project promoting low-energy and carbon solutions in residential housing, last June Tampere welcomed an open house event in two recently retrofitted buildings as part of the EU GUGLE Project.

The event, organised by Tampere Energy Agency, attracted 200 people willing to see what had been achieved during the renovation works.

The limited liability housing company Pohjolankatu 18-20, known as BEST 7, managed to reach 55 % of energy savings in purchased energy by replacing windows, improving the heat distribution system, and installing solar heat collectors and LED lighting with presence control.

The purchased energy consumption is expected to decrease even more as at the end of 2017 the housing company installed a ground-source pump for heating and cooling, PV panels (20 kWp) and a very innovative system: the first two-way district heating system and waste water heat recovery in residential buildings in Finland.

Other renovation works were carried out by the limited liability housing company Torinnaapuri, in a building known as BEST 6. They have achieved 47 % of energy savings in purchased energy so far. The building has undergone deep renovation resulting in 100mm of additional insulation to the outer walls and a new, nicer façade. They have installed new windows, LED lighting with presence control and have improved the heating system. An exhaust air heat pump was installed beside the district heating system and a remote controlled building energy management system was set up.

Cherry on the cake, all these visits were carried out in a friendly atmosphere, with a barbecue party held in the buildings’ backyard!
