"Climate change is the biggest environmental challenge of our time, and Tampere takes it seriously".
With 210,000 inhabitants and 45,000 more forecasted by 2030, Tampere (FI) has chosen to prepare its energy future today.
Indeed, the 45,000 more inhabitants who will settle in the city would, in a "business as usual" scheme, increase the greenhouse gas emissions by 30%.
The City of Tampere has decided to take action, by creating ECO2 : the Eco-efficient Tampere 2020 project. This project takes into account different dimensions of sustainable energy, such as energy production, energy efficiency, transports, urban planning and building sectors.
The City shows great ambitions : increasing the production of renewable energy by 30% by 2020 - and by 80% by 2040, developing sustainable modes of transport (bus, bikes, walking, city light rail), integrating environmental aspects in every building and in the urban-planning of the city.
In a video made in the frame of the ECO2 project, Mayor Timo P. Nieminen says "Climate change is the biggest environmental challenge of our time, and Tampere takes it serioulsy".

The City of Tampere has been a member of Energy Cities since 2010.
