In 2008, the Slovak Association of Towns and Cities founded CITENERGO - an "interest association" uniting Slovak local authorities committed to reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency and use of renewable energy sources on their territories.
Its founding members are rather big Slovak cities: Kosice, Nitra, Presov, Kremnica, Vrable and Gelnica.
Since the very beginning the idea was strongly supported by Energie-Cités: the creation of energy cities networks in the new member states was one of the main goals of the BISE initiative*.
During the last years, Energie-Cités and CITENERGO have been working together on several initiatives and events such as BISE process, workshops for municipalities promoting the idea of local energy forums (project BELIEF), CITENERGO is an observer partner in the MODEL project and has been promoting Energie-Cités’ activities and the Covenant of Mayors initiative in Slovakia.
CITENERGO has established a strong cooperation with partners at national and European level with the aim to provide high quality expertise and assistance to local authorities interested in energy issues. As a result, cities benefit from MODEL tools and methodologies, pubic lighting energy audits, awareness raising events and consultancy services of associated experts.
Cities of Presov (Energie-Cités’ member) and Kosice provide free energy advisory services to their citizens; the city of Nitra joined the Covenant of Mayors, set up a local energy agency and is working on its Sustainable Energy Action Plan, several cities invested in energy efficient public lighting...
The association is also interested to reinforce the cooperation with other Energie-Cités members, especially from Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary.
More actions to come!
*BISE initiative was launched by Energie-Cités in 2004 in order to help local authorities from 17 countries (New EU Member States, Western Balkans, Ukraine) to reduce the energy gap with their fellow municipalities of the EU-15.
