A combination of good governance, innovative co-operation and concrete measures in Delft, Grenoble and Växjö has brought to life three exceptional sustainable neighbourhoods.
Have a look at the final brochure of the CONCERTO-SESAC project to see how the cities got there! This publication presents the goals and achievements of the project, political commitment and innovative solutions for cities with a high quality of life.
The overall objective of SESAC is to show how sustainable energy systems can be achieved and to transfer the knowledge and experiences to others. These objectives have been achieved with great success!
“We have learned by doing!” says Saskia Bolten, Vice-Mayor of Delft. She points out that the main benefit of this project lies in its concrete implementation. “In Poptahof, the partners have created energy-efficient homes in such a wonderful way that delegations, both from the Netherlands and abroad, regularly visit Delft to see and learn from them. Buitenhof, the new sports centre, is an attractive demonstration project far below the national average in consumption of energy. Also, the objectives of the district heating system project remain a priority: to heat homes in Delft, employing the modern method of using industrial residual heat of the nearby waste water purification plant. This will definitely happen.”
- Saskia Bolten is a Vice Mayor, Chairperson of the Participation and Sustainable Development Committee for the Municipality of Delft.
”I have followed the SESAC project during its six years, and I am very proud to see how the project has contributed to local development. Demonstration activities in Växjö have given us experiences to further develop Växjö. These local projects have also become important and popular showcases for visitors from all over the world. I believe that it is very stimulating and rewarding for all partners to work together in such an international dimension.”
- Bo Frank, Mayor of Växjö.
“In 2050, 70 % of the world’s population will live in urban areas. This is the place where we need to reconsider sustainable development in terms of environmental, economic and social issues.
In Grenoble, we plan to continue to innovate, in terms of research as well as quality of life, by experimenting with new self-sufficient models in the heart of the town. Such a project is neither a "showcase" nor an urban marketing process but it leads to a new way of living together in the heart of our cities.”
- Michel Destot, Mayor of Grenoble.
A successful project
