by Miriam Eisermann on 15 December 2008 / 434 visites

Energie-Cités is back from Poznan! In the framework of the UN Climate Change Conference last weekend, the network took part in the Local Government side event which was coordinated by Iclei, UCLG and ZMP (the Polish Association of Municipalities), in relation with other networks of local authorities.

Zbigniew Michniowski, Vice-President of Energie-Cités and Gérard Magnin co-chaired the session entitled “The experiences of EU local authorities and networks: open discussion with municipalities from other continents”. It was organised together with the European networks and associations: Climate Alliance, CEMR, Eurocities. Read their Joint Statement.

On this occasion, the local authorities’ road map has received an enthusiastic support from the EU French Presidency through Brice Lalonde, the French Ambassador for Climate Change.

The event has shown that local authorities are already on the path to be officially recognised as a key dialogue partner in the international climate discussions. However, a strong effort is still needed on the road to Copenhagen, where the next UN Climate Conference will take place in December 2009.

Pedro Ballesteros from the European Commission has presented the role of the Covenant of Mayors as a "powerful instrument for local authorities to influence global decisions.”
