The idea is to reduce congestion in delivery lorry traffic by using the conventional Parisian tram lines. According to Mobilicités, 90% of deliveries in the Ile-de-France region are made by road.
In an 8km-long "test" phase, two empty trams will be inserted into conventional tram traffic during off-peak hours.

The objective is to investigate the possibility of using the tramway infrastructure to ecologically transport goods to shops in the City centre. Passenger traffic should not be disturbed as freight trams will be inserted between passenger trams.
If successful, this experiment could lead to an extension of the service by 2013 or 2014.
The main asset is the density of the Ile-de-France tramway network which is expected to reach 100 km in 2020.
The APUR- Atelier Parisien de l’Urbanisme (Paris Urban Planning Workshop) is to carry out a survey to assess potential tram freight flows with freight loaders at the beginning of next year.
The experiment should be positive as a survey carried out in late December revealed that passengers were not disturbed by these empty trains, some had not even noticed the change.
The City of Paris has been a member of Energy Cities since 2004.
