Paris: 75% less greenhouse gas emissions by 2050!
The Paris’ Climate Protection Plan, adopted by the City Council in October 2007, is the result of both a community expression of views and the thorough assessment of economic players, various local institutions and city administration departments. As such, it witnesses a strong collective commitment of Paris and its inhabitants.
This strong commitment is based on a “factor 4” approach and aims to result in 75% less greenhouse gas emissions from its own activities and those in Paris by 2050 compared to 2004.
Its targets are ambitious:
- 25% less greenhouse gas emissions
- 25% less energy consumption
- 25% of energy consumption to come from renewable energy sources
Delft: an annual reduction of 33,500 tons of CO2 emissions
The "3E: Klimaatplan Delft" (Delft Climate Plan) is the Delft interpretation of the Kyoto Convention, and is furthermore in line with the objectives of "3D: Duurzaamheidsplan Delft 2000-2003" (2002-2003 Delft Sustainability Plan). 3E
stands for: effective, efficient energy consumption. In its Climate Plan, Delft sets itself an ambitious target: being and remaining a front runner in the Netherlands and applying innovation wherever possible. Delft links its ambitions to a full measure of realism, which implies: no wild, vague plans, but concrete activities, relating to attainable objectives. The principal objective is an annual reduction of 33,500 tons of CO2 emissions, compared to 1999.This level of reduction should be realised not later than by 2012 (the final year of the plan period). On the basis of the Climate Scan performed by Novem, the largest environmental gain appears to come from (re-)construction processes
and the use of sustainable energy.
The Delft Climate Plan is an integral plan, affecting many areas within municipal organisation. The plan is directional, giving concrete indications concerning the policies and activities that could contribute to actual reduction of CO2 emissions. To this end, the municipality of Delft has adopted three strategies from the trias energetica:
- reducing demand by way of energy saving among end users,
- applying sustainable sources,
- (continued) optimisation in the application of fossil sources towards energy efficiency and reliability.
