This is the introduction to the new action plan of Sutton (GB), and this London borough really means it.
With a long history of environmental achievement (first environmental policy in 1986) and a remarkable transport policy (see "Smarter Travel Sutton"), Sutton wanted to go further and became part of the international network ‘One Planet’.
The document "One Planet Sutton" details the 10 principles the Council of Sutton committed itself to follow and summarises the short and long term objectives they wish to achieve.
What is ’One Planet’?
This is an international network of communities, local authorities and businesses, co-ordinated by local sustainability experts BioRegional and WWF. ’One Planet Living’ is a global initiative based on ten principles of sustainability such as zero carbon, zero waste, sustainable transport... (see picture).
What are Sutton’s commitments?
The Council has engaged in following each of the 10 principles of ’One Planet Living’.
For instance, in the transport sector they aim to achieve:
- More than 65% of council staff commuting to work using sustainable modes of transport by 2012 (from 54% in 2009), more than 75% by 2014 and 90% by 2017.
- Increase journeys to school by sustainable modes from 76% (2009) to 79% by 2014.
- Increase residents’ use of sustainable modes for travel from 48% to 58% by 2016.
- CO2 emissions from Sutton Council fleet to be reduced by 50% by 2017.
