Nantes – European Green Capital in 2013

by Claire Iochum on 5 novembre 2010 / 355 visites

Nantes‘ award goes beyond national borders : this month, the French city has obtained the title ”European Green Capital in 2013” from the European Commission.

The city has been chosen on the basis of 11 environmental criteria. Its adoption of a policy promoting sustainable modes of transport has been one of the strengths in Nantes’ application. Nantes has been the first French city to reintroduce the electrical tramways (in 1985). Its citizens can not only choose between several bus lines. They can also travel in one of the two boat-buses (Navibus) that are at their disposal. Another key element for the Commission’s positive decision was the city’s efforts in terms of biodiversity : 3.366 hectares of green spaces and several Natura 2000 zones guarantee a protection of nature in the area. In sum, this comprehensive strategy has reduced air pollution. A new climate plan aims at lowering CO2 emission of 25% by 2020.
