Last month, the German city of Munich dedicated several days to solar energy. During its 13th edition of the « Solar Days », three major events attracted Munich’s citizens and local decision-makers to the ’sunny side’ of the Bavarian capital:
- A conference debating technical questions on solar heating
- « Munich, the city of renewable energies » was the motto on Munich’s square "Marienplatz" with interactive stands and an ideas contest for pupils
- A conference and exhibition weekend at the Bauzentrum with more than
3 300 visitors and the exhibition of the IMAGINE panels
The "Solar days" are part of the actions that could be developed thanks to Energie-Cités in the framework of the BELIEF project.

The recently published study "Sustainable Urban Infrastructure: Munich - Paths towards a Carbon-Free Future" found out that a city like Munich can cut its CO2 emissions by up to 90 per cent by mid-century. Commissioned by Siemens, the Wuppertal Institute examined how a modern metropolis like Munich can drastically reduce the amount of CO2 it emits. Key levers for cutting CO2 emissions are high-efficiency energy applications, in particular in buildings; infrastructure modifications in the areas of heating, electricity and transportation and a transition to renewable and low carbon energy sources wherever possible.
The Solar Days have demonstrated that Munich is already on a good way to becoming a carbon-free metropolis.
