The construction works of the MIBI (Montpellier International Business Incubator) were launched in 2009 and came to an end in the first 2011 semester.
Located in the business park called Eurêka, the MIBI already hosts 15 French and international companies (United-States, Spain, Portugal, South Africa...). This 3500m2 building, funded by Montpellier Agglomération - the Montpellier urban community- can swank about being at the edge of technology both in terms of commerce AND environment.
Indeed, thanks to the winning combinaison of numerous elements such as 700m2 of PV solar pannels, a heat pump, a strong isolation, great natural light inputs..., this building is expected to produce 70,000 kWh a year. The 15% overcost compared to classical building will quickly be forgotten, as it produces more energy than it consumes.
In a video made by Actu-Environnement, Emmanuel Nebout, the architect in charge of the project, explains that for the MIBI, they
wanted to work on the "energy-plus" concept that seemed interesting to be further studied, and not only in terms of energy performance. He added that these ethics may become the bases to welcome, support and establish young creators and entrepreneurs from everywhere. The architect concludes that in this framework, consuming less and living better seemed to be the top values this building had to illustrate.
Not satisfied enough with hosting one of the first energy-plus building of the tertiary sector in France, Montpellier has also forecasted to build 2 "BEPOS" schools - energy-plus buildings- almost entirely funded by the City. A first school, whose construction works started in May 2011, will be ready to welcome pupils in September 2012. The second one, which will be bigger (about 3100 m2), will be ready for opening in 2013.
The City of Montpellier has been a member of Energy Cities since 1998 and is a Covenant of Mayors Signatory.
