Ivanic-Grad, Croatia

Living Streets can be the bearer of social change in our city.

Ivanić Grad is a municipality 30 km South-East of Zagreb with a population of 14.550 inhabitants. This small Croatian town has been a regional pioneer in developing sustainable energy projects.

Living Streets in Ivanic Grad

The main objectives of the Living Streets project in Ivanić, are to encourage the reduction of traffic by experimenting closing down the main square of the city to traffic and raising awareness of the importance of environmental protection.

2 editions of the Living Streets will be organised in Ivanic Grad when the main square is closed to the car and turns into a ’’living room’’ and through a variety of programmes it encourages citizens to participate and exhort thinking about sustainable urban development and sustainable agriculture.

During the first edition of the Living Streets in Ivanić, from 27 March to 9 April 2017, 2 specific workshops were dedicated to citizens, focusing on the future of the main square which is now open to traffic and encourages citizens to imagine its future with or without cars. There was also an online poll on this topic filled in by 250 citizens.

An urban gardening workshop was set up, including distribution of specific toolkits for citizens (pumpkin seeds, tools for gardening, labels for flower beds and instructions). In October the citizens will present their results via a competition (for example: the best pumpkin cake).
Also 4 schools and 4 kindergardens participate via an urban agriculture process focusing on aromatic herbs. Several highshools and NGOs were also involved, namely the Red Cross working with citizens with disabilities.

Several workshops were organised for high schools focusing on crowdfunding and start-ups.

Throughout the Living Streets period, citizens will have the chance to taste and buy local products, increasing the number of consumers of local food and agricultural products, contributing to strengthenning of the local economy.
