Inventory of city tools published

To invent a sustainable energy future, it is absolutely necessary that cities monitor their sustainability performances in a way that is scientifically based, yet simple to understand and communicate. Cities, especially those having signed the Covenant of Mayors, need to analyse their results and compare them with other cities (by appropriate benchmarking). As to EU institutions and national governments, they regularly need to obtain relevant information about how cities perform. The Covenant of Mayors offers a general framework for a systematic accounting of energy and climate efforts.
The consultancy company KPMG conducted an inventory of 57 initiatives and tools targeting cities. Most of them have
a European-wide focus. The inventory covers the following fields:
- Monitoring
- Benchmarking
- Disseminating
- Reporting
- Input/Design
In general, a distinction can be made between initiatives that refer to sustainability in the widest sense of the word – people, planet, profit -, and initiatives that are purely focused on measuring energy use and CO2 emissions.
Main recommendations of the document:
- envision ways to make energy and climate data comparable across cities and exchangeable between tools
- leverage the burden of energy and climate data search
- include city typologies into the decision-making process regarding energy and climate actions
- capitalise on examples of best practices - that’s what networks such as Energy Cities are there for!
