Hannover’s act2 demonstration projects are now online

The first findings from the evaluation programme for several of Hannover’s act2 demonstration projects are now available. Both in residential property retrofitting and the use of renewable energy sources, target savings or production levels were achieved and in some cases exceeded.

Datasheets are now ready on four demonstration projects: • Retrofitting multiple-occupancy buildings • Solar thermal installation at Lister Bad open-air pool • Wood pellet heating plant at Burgweg depot • Stadtwerke Hannover wood energy centre

At the end of 2007 the extensive energy-efficiency retrofitting of 24 multiple-occupancy buildings containing 206 apartments (total living area: 12,000 m²) was successfully completed. All the apartment houses are in the Vahrenwald district of Hannover. Retrofitting was to two different standards: the statutory requirements for new-build projects, and the ‘Kronsberg Standard’ which incorporates Passive House elements.

At 50-70%, the actual energy savings are markedly better than those from conventional renovation measures; the annual thermal energy consumption of an 80-m² apartment in the demonstration project corresponds to just 500 m³ of natural gas, and apartments retrofitted to Kronsberg Standard use around 10-20% less than this.

Particular attention was paid to the concerns of tenants affected by the retrofitting projects; they were involved in planning from the beginning and were able to stay in their apartments throughout the construction phase. Schedules and dates for the various works were optimised to keep nuisance for the tenants to a minimum.

At Lister Bad open-air swimming pool almost 1,800 m² of solar thermal absorbers have been heating the pool water since the start of the 2007 season. 450 MWh of heat were calculated by planners from Hannover Public Facility Management when the absorbers were installed, and 524 MWh were produced in the rather dull summer of 2008. From the 2009 season, bathers will also be kept informed about the ‘heating deliveries’ by the sun on an interactive monitor board.

Over 300,000 € were invested in conversion to wood pellet-fired district heating for the buildings at Burgweg Depot. In the first heating period, 2007/08, the foreseen results were not achieved because of teething troubles with the plant. The pellet-fired boiler is expected to meet 80% of heating demand in the current heating period, corresponding to a reduction in CO2 emissions of 245 t/a.
