Green eMotion, towards the “Transport 2050” objectives

by Floriane Bernardot on 4 avril 2011 / 336 visites

On Monday, March 28th the European commission unveiled its « Transport 2050 » strategy, an ambitious plan aimed at improving European mobility while reducing CO2 emissions.

This strategy includes banning (by 2050) vehicles with traditional fuel from cities, integrating biofuel in aviation up to 40%, and reducing emissions from sea transport by 40%. These measures were defined as priorities in order to decrease CO2 emissions due to transportation by 60% by 2050.

However critics have already been expressed, mostly regarding the applicability of these ambitious objectives. “Cars won’t be banned from city centres. ... Anymore than we will be having rectangular bananas” said UK Transport Minister Norman Baker. The French Union of Public and Rail Transport is worried about how financing these measures, provided that the initial idea of a transport funds wasn’t kept : “We do not have the means to apply such an ambitious policy”, says Valérie Beaudouin, Director of their European department.

But some have already started working on it. In the frame of this transport roadmap, the Green eMotion project was granted a subsidy of €M24.2 by the European commission. Green eMotion, whose goal is to promote « electric mobility » in the European Union, was created from the partnership of 42 organizations coming from local authorities, faculties and research institutes, industry, automotive producers, electricity companies.

With a total budget of €M41.8, the project coordinates 12 initiatives conducted in 8 EU member states* -among which 8 cities are Energy Cities members- and will allow to “compare the different technological approaches” and to “contribute to identify the best solutions for the European market”, thanks to an exchange platform for instance.
