Geneva and Martigny – European Energy Award Gold

by Claire Iochum on 4 novembre 2010 / 202 visites

It is the achievement after several years of perspicacious urban planning : our Swiss member cities Geneva and Martigny received the European Energy Label Gold this week.

The European Energy Award assesses cities according to objective criteria covering six fields : territorial development, municipal buildings, energy supply, mobility, internal organisation and communication.

Geneva has been particularly active and successful in reducing the energy consumption for heating (-40%) and water consumption (-32%) of its own building stock. One of the means used to raise awareness of building users was the Display poster and related communication activites. By 2012, the city will have finished the modernisation of its public lighting system : 4 500 light points will be replaced to reduce electricity consumption by 30%. Wherever possible, the city aims at 100% renewables solutions for the refurbishment of buildings by using geothermal and solar energy, biomass as well as heat recuperation from sewage water.

Due to the actions and projects carried out on its territory, Martigny was awarded the “Cité de l’Energie” label in April 2004. Since then, the city has been pursuing its commitment to energy efficiency and has now obtained the European Energy Award® Gold label. This is a recognition for having set up a strict energy policy with the objectives of promoting and developing renewable energies, improving energy efficiency (district heating network, municipal buildings, etc.) and raising awareness amongst the local population. Its participation in the Display Campaign has been one corner stone if its energy management in public buildings since 2007.

Both, Geneva and Martigny, members of Energy Cities, have signed the Covenant of Mayors and participate in the REVE d’Avenir project. This French-Swiss initiative mobilises 3,4 million inhabitants from 27 local authorities to contribute to the 3x20% energy and climate objectives.
