by Claire Iochum on 2 novembre 2010 / 448 visites

This week, the German city of Freiburg, already know as the Solar capital of Germany, has been elected “Federal capital of climate protection 2010” ("Hauptstadt im Klimaschutz") by the German Environmental Aid (Deutschen Umwelthilfe).

The list of awardees with over 100.000 inhabitants is exclusively filled with very active members of the Energy Cities network : Freiburg is followed by Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg ! Freiburg is famous for its extensive use of solar energy, its exemplary eco-neighbourhoods and a mobility concept giving priority to public transport, pedestrians and cyclists.

Over 100 projects for climate protection are currently being implemented by the municpal administration and its partners. The municipal climate protection concept includes

  • energy strategies for new construction sites taking into consideration CHP
  • the incentive programme „energy efficient refurbishment“
  • subsidies for solar installations through the project „FREESUN“,
  • the further promotion of sustainable modes of transport Freiburg aims at 40% CO2 emissions reductions by 2030.
