Frankfurt-am-Main holds the European record for buildings constructed to passive house standards: homes, schools, day nurseries, sports halls and office buildings, for a total of 1,000 passive buildings – 100,000m2.
Nowadays in Frankfurt, all city-owned buildings have to comply with passive standards, as well as any building on plots of lands purchased from the municipality.
In this eco-friendly background, the City organizes every two years the “Green Building Frankfurt” architectural award. To win a prize, a “Green Building” has to be “innovative, exceptionally well-designed and sustainable”.

In 2009, 8 buildings distinguished themselves. From residential estate to office buildings, they were all frontrunners of sustainable construction.
Frankfurt is currently looking for the “Green Buildings” 2011!
