Figueres (Spain), always in action!

The city of Figueres (ES), Energy Cities member since 2009, shows a great will to meet the requirements of the Covenant of Mayors of which they are signatories. Three major actions have already been realised.
Catalunya Square, a place hosting many local activities such as markets and open-air concerts, has been entirely renewed in order to allow energy savings. The structure is now made of transparent walls to enter and of a roof covered with 1,252 square meters of photovoltaic panels. The energetic production capacity of these panels is estimated at 127 MWh per year. Coupled with the transparent structure giving a better lightening, the PV panels will allow a decrease in the CO2 emissions by up to 49 tons.

Aware of the necessity to change our working methods from the bottom, Figueres went on the spot. The town provided 14 professionals of the energy sector (electricians, technicians…) with a training program in accordance with the “new paradigm of the energy sector of today” and related to energy efficiency and renewable energies. In this framework, 27 municipal buildings and 130 trades in Figueres were audited; a municipal building has already been renewed.
The third action launched is a huge study for the implantation of wind turbines in the area of Alt Empordà (North East of Spain). Leaded by Figueres, the study involved all the municipalities of the region, taking into account many relevant criteria, such as availability of the wind resource, protected natural spaces (landscapes, forest), ground of high agricultural value, local urban plans… This in-depth study resulted in the finding of 28 possible zones of implantation, among which one was chosen to welcome between 136 and 193 wind turbines.
