European Mobility Week 2011 : ready, steady… go !

By Floriane Bernardot on 6 September 2011

The European Mobility Week 2011

‘Alternative Mobility’. This is the 2011 theme of the European Mobility Week, which takes place every year from September 16th to 22nd.

Although the Mobility Week has not been launched yet, it is expected to be very successful. To date, 1,360 cities have already registered to participate in this European event that has even spread overseas: now Brazil, Colombia, Japan, Canada, Equator and Taiwan also organise the Mobility Week!

Participating in this event is a great opportunity to initiate a large range of activities and give local authorities and other organisations the chance to promote their actions in favour of sustainable mobility, to raise citizen’s awareness and to launch relevant partnerships.

So... ready, steady!...

For any further information and registration details, please go to the EMW official website: www.mobilityweek.eu

Members in the spotlight

In the field of sustainable mobility, Energy Cities’ members are taking action.

  • Newcastle (GB) has recently invested in a fleet of 26 hybrid electric buses, which will be complemented by an environmental zone and air quality management area. More info.
  • Freibug (DE) has installed a LED street lighting system powered by solar energy. This system, the very fisrt of its kind in Germany, moreover allowed to strengthen the safety on a cycle path and pedestrian intersection. More info (in German).
  • Lyon (FR) has entirely reorganised its bus & trolley system, to improve the service (lines, frequence, connection to other public transports). This new system called "Atoubus" was put in place on August 29th 2011 and shows the will of the City and Urban Community of Lyon to encourage the use of public transport. More info (in French).
  • Malmö (SE) says "no" to ridiculous car trips, and encourage the use of bicycle through a very innovative and creative campaign. See our article.
