EU-China Mayors Forum to be attended by President Barroso and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao - 20 Sept

The European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jiabao have confirmed their participation in the EU-China Mayors Forum, the city networking flagship event of the EU-China Urbanisation Partnership, to be held on 19-20 September in Brussels. As part of a starting process, this high-level political forum shall enhance peer-to-peer co-operation to share experiences and best practices. Organisers are counting on the participation of Covenant of Mayors cities, as the initiative was identified as the most appropriate movement to interface with the Chinese Association of Mayors.

In parallel and in the framework of the future “Europe-China eco-cities link (EC-LINK)” project, the European Commission intends to assist Chinese cities in adopting energy -and resource- efficient ecological solutions by sharing experiences on sustainable urbanisation and other relevant policies between Europe and China.

A first high-level event in May had already gathered 500 participants, out of whom 200 Chinese delegates. Twenty Chinese mayors, including leaders of Beijing, Shenzhen and Chengdu, were present to discuss with their European peers. On this occasion, Eckart Würzner, Mayor of Heidelberg and President of Energy Cities recalled the crucial role to be played by European cities in general and the Covenant of Mayors in particular in this new cooperation endeavour.

Chinese authorities are interested in the EU experience of dense and clean cities, with efficient infrastructures, good private-public co-operation schemes and attention to social integration. The growing co-operation between mayors and local authority representatives from the EU and China is also a result of the Covenant of Mayors, which is creating new models of sustainable, low-carbon city planning with over 4000 signatory cities.

Energy Cities, which is leading the Covenant of Mayors Office, is ready to provide its experience and technical assistance to link sustainable visions between European and Chinese local authorities.
