EIB loan to support sustainable transportation in Finland

by Floriane Bernardot on 16 May 2011 / 122 visites

The European Investment Bank - EIB - is to provide a loan of up to €450 million for the construction of a new metro line in Finland. Commuting in the Helsinki area will become faster and more ecofriendly.

A new 14km-long metro line will soon link the centre of Helsinki to Espoo (FI). This expansion will be financed by a loan from the EIB granted to Länsimetro, a company owned by the two municipalities.

An estimated 100,000 commuters are expected to travel everyday by this ’Westmetro’, moving away from road transport and benefiting from faster and sustainable transport services.

“The European Investment Bank is pleased to support this significant project. The Westmetro will contribute to the further integration and growth of one of Northern Europe’s most dynamic regions,” said EIB Vice-President Eva Srejber.

The project, which is to be completed by 2015, will also be supported by the Nordic Investment Bank, the Finnish government and the two municipalities.
