ESCOs: Dobrich (Bulgaria) made the right choice!

The city of Dobrich, seized the opportunity offered by the Energy Performance Contracting signing a 7-year contract with an ESCO that already allowed the city to refurbish a primary school in just one month! Concretely, the works included the insulation of external walls and the roof, the renovation of windows, thermal solar installation, boiler insulation and modernisation of the kitchen (see picture below).
Since then, the ESCO has been monitoring consumption in real-time. The works have generated energy savings of 40%.

Energy services are getting more and more important, even necessary, to reach the EU’s energy efficiency and climate targets. ESCOs exist in almost every European country, but this solution is often forgotten in times of financial constraints. Yet, Energy Performance Contracts are a good solution.
eu.ESCO (European Association of Energy Service Companies) recently published a document on "Energy Performance Contracting in the European Union" where you can read that "EPC overcomes the need for upfront capital investment. Rather, it guarantees future savings in energy demand to finance practical, engineered plant improvements. It is an innovative way of bringing about change and reducing risk of overcoming a lack of inhouse technical skills, resources and budget.”
Furthermore, any sustainable energy project using the EPC can currently apply for the "European Energy Service Awards 2011" organised by the European Energy Service Initiative (Germany). Find more!
