Covenant in Croatia: Local governments show strong determination to shape a sustainable future
Congratulations first : our member city Rijeka, also holding the presidency of the Croatian Association of Cities, is the first Croatian city having submitted its Sustainable Energy Action Plan and SEAP template in the framework of its Covenant of Mayors commitment.
On 15-16th October over 200 representatives of Croatian local and regional authorities and the private sector gathered to discuss solutions for a more sustainable development amidst the economic crisis. This conference was co-organised by the Croatian Association of Cities, Supporting Structure of the Covenant of Mayors.
Endorsed by the words of the President of this Candidate Country calling for optimism, the conference put local authorities in the spotlight, as key actors for regional development and for re-inventing a more sustainable future. Discussions focused on issues of high local relevancy :
- Smart use of EU funds and other funding
- The necessity of cooperation among public and private sectors
- Energy and resource efficiency as pathways leading out of the financial crisis
Indeed, 12 Croatian local authorities have signed the Covenant of Mayors to date, recognising their power in fighting not only climate change, but the economic crisis and creating a better future for their citizens.
