Deeply rooted in local dynamics boosted by the Rhônes-Alpes region, the Savoy department and the creation of the National Solar Energy Institute (Institut National de l’Énergie Solaire), the developement of solar energy is amazing. With more than 3800m2 of solar panels installed, Chambéry is the leader of the solar thermal energy* category of the RES Champions League.
With the photovoltaic power plant of "Les Monts", the city was one the first French cities to install such a big plant in 2004 : 1000m2 of solar pannels produce 110 000 kWh of electricity a year. Aware of the potential of the PV sector, not only in terms of environment but also in terms of job creation and social progress, Chambéry increases its efforts, making lands available or financing installation of PV pannels at individuals’.

In addition, the district heating system is getting more and more diversified, with the aim of exceeding a 60% part of renewable energy.
In this view 2 wood boilers will be created, giving a new boost to the wood sector in Savoy, whose production will triple.
Henri Dupassieux, deputee Mayor in charge of sustainable development, thinks that with these achievements, Chambéry will reach the EU 3x20 objectives for its own needs as soon as 2013- instead of the 2020 term : a 20% CO2 cut, a 20% cut in its energy consumption, and a 20% part of renewable energy.»

* Solar energy vocabulary
In the solar energy sector, a distinction is made between the solar photovoltaic energy, which allows to transform sun light in electric current, and the solar thermal energy, which consists in directly heating water from sun rays (hot water production and/or heating).
