Cascais - Efficient lighting in social housing

By Miriam Eisermann on 16 September 2009

EMGHA, a management company for social housing in Cascais,in cooperation with the Agência Municipal de Energia de Cascais and a private company, has started a programme to distribute 2,027 low-energy lightbulbs in its housing stock.

Four free fluorescent lightbulbs were distributed to each household, along with advice on energy efficiency in the form of a short questionnaire. The action is simple, objective, and clear: the goal is to promote the replacement of traditional incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent energy-saving bulbs which on a large scale will contribute to a reduction in energy consumption in these homes and make people aware of energy efficiency.

This is the second phase of the plan for efficient lighting in social housing, and is supported by the National Federation of Youth Organisations and the Portuguese Youth Institute — bulbs are distributed door-to-door by young volunteers. The scheme will be extended nationally, distributing a total of 450,000 bulbs to residents of social housing and old districts.

It will run for the rest of the year, resulting in a total reduction of 161,000 MWh of energy consumption, or the equivalent of the annual consumption of 60,000 Portuguese households. The measure will save families a total of 18 million euros and avoid the emission of 60,000 tonnes of CO2.

Cascais is member of Energie-Cités and participates in the Display Campaign.
