Energy Cities’ members delivering on their Covenant of Mayors CO2 reduction commitments

In the aftermath of the UN climate conference in Paris, we are proud to show that Energy Cities’ members are at the forefront of climate action. An evaluation of their performance in the Covenant of Mayors at the end of last year proved that they have managed to exceed EU ambitions in terms of CO2-emission reduction and energy efficiency, ahead of the 2020 benchmark.

Tbilisi (Georgia): energy policy for the people

Back in the 1990s Georgia made first steps towards energy efficiency through small-scale donor supported programs. Since then, a lot has changed and climate and energy action has scaled up considerably. Much of it happens at the local level, thanks also to the Covenant of Mayors' efforts in the area.

City of Parma encourages citizens to undertake energy renovation work in their homes

The municipality of Parma (Italy) has the ambition to reduce the cost of energy and energy poverty on its territory, while improving its citizens’ quality of life. As early as beginning of 2016, the municipality will launch a set of incentives and measures aimed at motivating citizens and local businesses to energy renovate their homes and buildings.

COP21 host Paris releases Climate Adaptation Roadmap

Since Monday, Paris is hosting the UN Climate Summit. With the adoption by the Municipal Council of a Climate Adaptation Strategy, the city proves political leadership in terms of climate change. Paris wishes to share its political courage, innovation, imagination and the participation of all stakeholders with the international COP21 community in the aim of positively influencing the final climate agreement.

Victory for local energy! Swedish municipality of Växjö wins case against competition authority

Three years ago, the municipality of Växjö was sued by the national competition authority for requiring city owners to connect to its local district heating system. This Monday 16 November, the Stockholm District Court ruled in favor of Växjö, marking a victory for local sustainable energy projects, often unable to compete with free market imperatives.

New Covenant of Mayors was officially launched and endorsed on the occasion of the Joint Covenant of Mayors & Mayors Adapt Ceremony held on 15 October 2015 in Brussels. The cities shall now commit to the European Union’s 2030 CO2 target : a 40% emission reduction by 2030. Moreover, climate mitigation and adaptation have been integrated into one single initiative.
