Energy efficiency implemented too slowly in Europe: a status report from “Energy Efficiency Watch3”

More than 1.100 experts from all 28 EU Member States were consulted about the relative progress in energy policies of their own countries in the last 3 years. The aim of the survey was to learn from stakeholders and experts how they see the "real-life" progress of energy efficiency policies and their implementation across different sectors in their respective country.

Energy performance label: Finnish cities support the Display label and call for clearer rules for the voluntary EU scheme

The EU campaign Display, launched as early as in 2004, is an information tool to raise the public awareness. Designed by energy experts from European cities and based on operational rating and easy to understand, the certificate displays the energy, water and climate performance of a building. This Display poster combined with further awareness-raising activities involving building users has proven very successful in increasing behaviour change of building users and stimulating renovation in both public and privately-owned buildings.

Energy-renovation of houses : In Bordeaux Metropole, 85% of households fit requirements for a dedicated bank loan !

Private housing accounts for 80% of Bordeaux Metropole’s housing stock and thus has been made a priority of its buildings’ energy-retrofitting policy. The objective of Bordeaux Metropole (Bordeaux Urban Community) is to implement several financing mechanisms that would ease energy-efficient renovation of the housing stock.

Portuguese city of Águeda sets up a local Fund for Energy and Water Efficiency

Known for its colourful streets, the small Portuguese town of Águeda undertakes a number of actions from environmental education to technological innovation and energy efficiency with the objective to become the first ‘Smart City’ in the country. It does not lag behind the front-runner European cities when it comes to innovative financing either. The municipality has just created a local Fund for Energy and Water Efficiency based on the model used by the city of Stuttgart (Germany).

Croatia's first local energy revolving fund is in Koprivnica!

When it comes to energy efficiency and innovative financing solutions, the city of Koprivnica is one the leading local authorities in Croatia. Together with its strategic partner Regional Energy Agency North (REA North), the municipality explored the opportunity to set up a local energy revolving fund that would finance its sustainable energy actions in the public sector.

Energy Cities’ members delivering on their Covenant of Mayors CO2 reduction commitments

In the aftermath of the UN climate conference in Paris, we are proud to show that Energy Cities’ members are at the forefront of climate action. An evaluation of their performance in the Covenant of Mayors at the end of last year proved that they have managed to exceed EU ambitions in terms of CO2-emission reduction and energy efficiency, ahead of the 2020 benchmark.

Tbilisi (Georgia): energy policy for the people

City of Parma encourages citizens to undertake energy renovation work in their homes

The municipality of Parma (Italy) has the ambition to reduce the cost of energy and energy poverty on its territory, while improving its citizens’ quality of life. As early as beginning of 2016, the municipality will launch a set of incentives and measures aimed at motivating citizens and local businesses to energy renovate their homes and buildings.

According to the World Health Organisation, "resilient and empowered communities respond proactively to new or adverse situa- tions, prepare for economic, social and environmental change and cope better with crisis and hardship." At a time when "crisis" and "hardship" have probably become the most frequently used words in our daily news, community resilience seems to be the bright light at the end of the tunnel.
